The talented engineer who headed the Goroblagodatsk and Perm works, Alexander Deryabin, looked far ahead when planning to build an ordnance plant in 1807. He decided in favor of a small metallurgical plant situated on the banks of the Izh River. Favorable location, rich water and fuel resources, cheap labor force and many other factors played a decisive role in the development of his plant in particular and Russia as a whole. It is impossible to overestimate the significance of this plant in Russia's history. Even during the first year of its activity the plant assembled seven flint-lock rifles and made six cutlasses, and during the 1812 Patriotic War Izhevsk armorers delivered more than 6,000 rifles to the Russian army, making a considerable contribution to the victory over the Napoleonic invaders. In the first half of the 19th century, Izhevsk Ordnance Plant produced one-third of the total output of all Russian ordnance plants. Here are the main landmarks in Izhmash history to produce new weapons in Russia: 1867. The 15.24mm breach-loading rifles were put into production. 1874. Izhmash started production of 10.16mm Berdan rifles. l891. The 7.62mm Sergei Mosin rifle was put into production. Izhevsk Ordnance Plant was the only plant to manufacture all its variants, including infantry rifles, dragoon rifles, cavalry rifles and dragoon carbines. 1930. Izhevsk designers radically updated the dragoon rifle, known as Model 1891-1930. It remained in production until 1944. During World War ll, Izhevsk Ordnance Plant assembled 10,000 to 12,000 7.62mm rifles per day. Izhmash contribution was invaluable during the 1941–1945 war years. It produced 18 types of weapons, including antitank rifles developed by Degtyarev and Simonov, aircraft machine guns and cannons developed by Shpitalny and Nudelman-Suranov. Izhmash also manufactured pistols and revolvers. 1948. This year saw the production of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, the most renown and mass produced small arms in the world. 1964. The SVD Dragunov sniper rifle was put into production and became the most popular one in the world. A variant with a folding butt added to the functional capabilities of this rifle. Wide experience gained over two centuries, rich traditions, huge research
and technical potentials and, most of all, talented developers help manufacture
weapons that have a good reputation worldwide. The weapons incorporate
the best innovations of the famous Kalashnikov assault rifle and SVD Dragunov
sniper rifle.
The AK-101, AK-102, AK-103, AK-104 and AK-105 assault rifles are developed
from the AK-74M Kalashnikov assault rifle. These assault rifles constitute
the whole family of the so-called 100th series, chambered for internationally
used calibers, including 7.62x39 mm, 5.45x39 mm and 5.56x45 mm NATO.
The Saiga-410, Saiga-12 and Saiga-20 smoothbore carbines are civilian-oriented
weapons. This radically expands the sphere of their use, ranging from hunting
to service employment. In addition to base carbines, there are models with
folding butts and short barrels. The design allows users to mount different
types of sights.
The Bizon-2 submachine gun is chambered for standard and high impulse modernized pistol cartridges. It features high accuracy and consistency of fire, compact size and convenience of concealed carrying, large magazine capacity, high accuracy of fire when suddenly provoked, stability of short burst fire from one or two hands and advantages in delivering fire from shelter. All these advantages speak volumes about high degree of this weapon reliability. The Nikonov AN-94 Model 1994 assault rifle is a new generation of automatic
weapon. It surpasses other known versions of assault rifles in terms of
technical characteristics as well as many design improvements.
Weapon makers from Izhevsk are worthy of a standing on the international
market. The pledge of their success in cooperation with business partners
lies in the high quality of their weapons proven over time. |
